Tucked into a back alley near Sookmyung Women’s University Station, Rave Pizza has the kind of exterior that catches people mid-step. A bold red marquee reads “RAVE ✦ Super delicious Pizza — Instant Bliss in Every Bite!” String lights run the length of the sign. Delivery mopeds are parked out front. A chalkboard sandwich board on the pavement announces, simply: “NOT A SLICE OF PIZZA.” None of it is particularly subtle, and none of it is supposed to be.


An American Diner, Planted in Seoul
Inside, the premise is committed from floor to ceiling. White subway tile walls. Chrome-legged barstools with lime-green vinyl cushions. Vinyl booths upholstered in pale cream and green, set into birch wood frames. Fluorescent tube lights run overhead, casting that warm, slightly yellowed glow of a room that has decided it will always be 1978. A ceiling fan turns slowly above the kitchen counter.
The counter faces an open kitchen window, framed by three large backlit menu boards — the kind found in airport food courts or highway rest stops, animated with retro typography advertising the Super Rave, Clam Chowder, and seasonal specials. Below the boards, the kitchen is visible in full: stacked tins of Mutti polpa, bottles of Sriracha, a fan blowing warm air over what looks like a prep station. Kettle Chips in bags. Doritos stacked under a shelf. The effect is part pizza restaurant, part deli counter as art installation.
On the other side of the room, window-facing barstools look out onto a thoroughly Korean back alley — brick buildings, signs in Hangul, a bicycle resting against a wall, neighbourhood detritus. The contrast is one of Rave’s most quietly interesting qualities: the interior transports you somewhere else, and then the windows pull you right back.
The orange-painted service wall houses the self-bar — Heinz ketchup and yellow mustard in pump dispensers, Kraft parmesan, small ceramic ramekins for portioning. Above it, orange shelving holds vinyl records, a Halloween pumpkin decoration, black cat figurines, zines, a small bookshelf. Stacked high toward the ceiling above the shelves: hundreds of white pizza boxes, arranged like brickwork. It functions as insulation, decoration, and an unspoken declaration of how many pizzas leave this building.


The Menu
Pizza comes in three sizes — Small (roughly 20cm, solo), Regular (two people), and Large (three) — plus a Quarter option that loads four different varieties onto a single large pie. The latter is the dominant choice for groups and, given how difficult it is to narrow things down, a sensible one.
Super Rave is the flagship: pepperoni, Bockwurst sausage, beef, Canadian ham, tomatoes, and olives on a thin, chewy-edged crust. The dough is consistently praised — there’s a specific balance of crispness underneath and chew through the middle that makes the base worth paying attention to rather than just treating as a vehicle for toppings.
Acid Shrimp is the one that surprises people. Shrimp and potato chips — actual kettle-cut chips — on a pizza. The combination has no business working as well as it does, but the salty crunch against soft toppings turns out to be one of those things that seems obvious in retrospect.
Cheese Ecstasy brings together fried cheese, mozzarella, Grana Padano, and Norwegian brown cheese (brunost), the last of which gives the whole thing an unusual savouriness that lingers. Basil Mascarpone runs in the opposite direction — clean, herbal, lighter.
Clam Chowder, advertised on its own dedicated backlit board — “Tender clams, potatoes, rich broth. Perfect with RAVE Pizza. Dip-in pizza for an exquisite experience” — leans fully into the New England diner reference point. The logic is that a bowl of clam chowder for dipping pizza exists somewhere in the American Midwest, and Rave has chosen to embrace this entirely. The Happiness Gnocchi side appears in nearly every review, unprompted.
The newest addition to the menu takes the seasonal-trend playbook and runs with it: a Dubai Chewy Cookie Pizza, bringing the pistachio-kadaif-marshmallow flavour profile currently sweeping Seoul’s dessert scene onto a sweet pizza base. The Dubai chewy cookie (두바이 쫀득쿠키, or colloquially 두쫀쿠) has been the most viral Korean food trend of late 2025 into 2026 — a marshmallow-wrapped ball filled with kadaif noodles and pistachio cream, which went from specialist dessert shops to convenience stores to a dedicated real-time stock tracking map on Toss in the span of a few months. That Rave has moved it onto a pizza says something about the restaurant’s willingness to stay in the current conversation while keeping things strange.


The Lettering Pizza
Separate from the regular menu, Rave offers a Lettering Pizza (레터링 피자) — a large pie decorated with edible lettering, typically for birthdays or celebrations. The poster on the wall shows a pizza reading HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAVE surrounded by candle decorations and says simply: “Blow Me.”
Reservations are made via DM to @ravepizza.official on Instagram. The process: DM to receive an order form, choose the message, pay in advance (L-size pizza price + ₩8,000 lettering surcharge), then make a separate Naver reservation for the dine-in visit. At least two days advance booking is the standard guidance. Candles are sold at the restaurant, though at a price that prompts most regulars to stop at Daiso on the way.


On the Walls
Two narrow shelves on the white brick wall hold a small collection of vinyl records: Roadie, ICE MC, a couple of USA-themed compilation covers, a disco ball sleeve. A poster for Rave’s own lettering pizza event hangs below. A convex security mirror near the entrance bounces a fish-eye view of the whole room back at itself. The analog clock on the wall is a flip clock — the kind that used to be in every budget hotel room before smartphones made them obsolete.
