Some cafés feel like something that should have lasted forever. Cafe Scene Cafe was one of them.
There are places that disappear before the internet catches up with them. Cafe Scene Cafe, tucked into a side street in Eungam-dong, was that kind of place — a neighborhood cinephile café that ran on red velvet and classic film, operating quietly enough that when it closed, it left almost no trace behind. The photographs are what remain.

The Red Room
The façade announced itself without apology: the entire storefront painted in deep theatrical red, the name set in cream serif capitals above large plate glass windows, brass carriage lanterns flanking the entrance. It looked less like a café and more like a small rep cinema that had decided, at some point, to also serve coffee.

Inside, a channel-tufted red velvet banquette ran the length of the main room and turned the corner, wrapping the space in an unbroken ribbon of cinema-seat red. Against it sat dark Thonet bistro chairs on ornate cast iron bases — furniture that could have been pulled from a Parisian brasserie circa 1960, or staged for a Godard film about one. Vintage film posters hung on the white walls above the banquette. DVD cases lined the shelves. A projector mounted to the ceiling confirmed that the cinema references were not purely decorative — this was a café that actually screened films. Classic films running quietly in the background while people drank their coffee, as if the room required it.

That it is gone now is the ordinary tragedy of small independent cafés in Seoul’s residential neighborhoods. That it existed at all is the more interesting part.

The red is still the right color for a place like this. It’s the color of curtains going down.
